With Ole Miss losing to Miami, the SEC will have no representation at the National Championship game on January 19. It will actually mark the third year in a row that the SEC has not been represented, which is quite a shock given that the prior eight championship games have had at least one SEC vying for the title.

What makes matters worse is that there were five SEC teams that entered this year's playoff, and they won a grand total of three games.

So has the SEC's reign as the pre-eminent conference come to an end? Has the quality of the SEC declined, or have the other conferences just gotten better?

Also, does the playoff itself show that this is a better judge of college football quality than the overall rankings are?

News of Lane Kiffin's move from Ole Miss to LSU at the height of the college football playoff push has been all over social media this past weekend. Maybe it was due to the Ole Miss administration's inflexibility all along, but it seems like the Mississippi football program is the biggest loser in all of this. Not only are they losing their head coach as they make a run for the national championship, but they are also losing a part of their coaching staff, which Kiffin is taking with him to LSU. They'll need a new coach and may have trouble recruiting for next year.

Lane Kiffin wins out with a massive salary in a new program, but his legacy is hugely tarnished but this move. I remember that when he left Tennessee for USC, I thought he didn't seem very loyal. However, that was peanuts compared to this more recent move.

The winner in all this, of course, is LSU, which gets a new coach and staff in time for the recruiting season.
